Madama Butterfly (original title in Italian) is an opera in three acts with the musics by Giacomo Puccini and a booklet in Italian by Giuseppe Giacosa and Luigi Illica.
Puccini based his opera on the story "Madame Butterfly" (1898) by John Luther Long, which was dramatized by David Belasco. But he also relied it on the novel Madame Chrysanthème (1887) by Pierre Loti.
According to research, this opera was based on events that actually occurred in Nagasaki in the early 1890s.
In this book, the artist proposes some watercolors' illustrations, giving a rather traditional and light vision, reminding the Japanese atmosphere of peace and tranquility, what contrasts with Madama Butterfly’s brutal life.
